In the end, almost everything we purchase at the mall looses its luster and ends up in a landfill. So, what is the motivation behind Black Friday and rampant consumerism?
As I watch the long lines of people that gather outside the major department stores, I can't help but wonder about the need for the individual to measure his value against the relative worth of his fellow men.
Black Friday is a religious event. It is the opportunity to be a god for a day. Having some rare toy or doo-dad in your possession before everyone else in your world does.
We are all busy building altars to ourselves. Telling the world that it is us that they should worship. Our homes have become
our shrines. Our cars have become our altars. Our clothing has become our Priestly attire.
All scream out to the masses, "Come and worship me! For I am wiser and more knowledgeable about the things you truly value."
Sadly, many of these shrines have been built on theft, deception and illusions. Often-times, they are built on the back of slave labor and the suffering of others. The Marianna Islands, a so-called US protectorate, is notorious for its sub-human working conditions.
In essence, this was another Jack Abramoff scandal that was brushed under the rug.
"Abramoff took on the Northern Mariana Islands as a client in 1995. Abramoff and his law firm were paid at least $6.7 million by the CNMI government from 1995 to 2001.
The CNMI is a US commonwealth and thus may apply the "Made in USA" label to goods manufactured on Saipan.
Frank Murkowski, then Republican Senator from Alaska and chairman of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, submitted a bill to extend the protection of U.S. minimum-wage labor laws to the workers in the CNMI.
In testimony before the Senate, it was described that 91% of the private-sector workforce were immigrants, and were being paid barely half the U.S. minimum hourly wage. Stories also emerged of workers forced to live behind barbed wire in squalid shacks without plumbing. A Department of the Interior report found that "Chinese women were subject to forced abortions and that women and children were subject to forced prostitution in the local sex-tourism industry."The Senate passed the Murkowski worker reform bill unanimously." (Source)
Abramoff flew Tom Delay to the islands where the Senator remarked: "When one of my closest and dearest friends, Jack Abramoff, your most able representative in Washington, D.C., invited me to the islands, I wanted to see firsthand the free-market success and the progress and reform you have made." (Ibid)
After the trip, Abramoff helped Tom Delay write legislation that gave Saipon numerous exemptions to allow the slave-labor camps to continue, along with the infamous sex-slave industry:
In addition, Abramoff's lobbying team helped Rep. Ralph Hall (R-TX) craft statements attacking the credibility of "Katrina," a teenaged sex slave who federal officials relocated to Hawaii and who testified to federal investigators and Congress about the sex trade on that island, in the process forestalling a federal criminal prosecution. (Ibid)
Now, international corporations are converting the United States into their next slave-labor camp. Illegal immigration is an important part of their plan to boost profits at the expense of American labor. The importation of goods manufactured by slave labor has been replaced with the importation of the slave laborers themselves.
The money saved on bringing those goods to market makes the whole enterprise a profitable one. Leaders in Industry and Finance, like Bill Marriott and the Eccles family, work with politicians like Orrin Hatch to impede the process of prosecuting our modern slave-masters and sending their slaves back to their countries of origin. Sadly their efforts have been rubber stamped by Ecclesiastical Authorities that are the beneficiaries of their financial largesse.
The thought that any Church would support their efforts is especially repulsive when one considers that it is normally the Churches that have to clean up their mess. To endorse the exploitation of illegal slave-labor is hardly Christian. Instead, it smacks of co-conspiracy with those forces that are destroying these United States from the inside out.
